Transfer of Virgin Active Diamond Membership

I hope someone can help. I have a Diamond membership with Virgin Active which means my monthly fee is fixed for life. This membership was taken out a number of years ago is linked to a gym which Virgin Active have now decided to close giving just 4 weeks notice.
When I asked for my membership to be transferred to a more local gym, they are advising that they cannot honor this membership as it no longer exists for new members and I need to sign up to a new fee which is a) more expensive a month and b) subject to yearly increases.
I know they can set up the membership at my local club as my husband is on the rate in question. I fail to see what I should be financially worse off in the long run due to a business decision they have made which is totally out of my control.
At the moment I am digging my heels in as I have been a member for over 10 years. I have written to head office saying I do not accept their offer and expect them to honor my current membership but does anyone know where I might stand with this please?
Thanks

Hi,
I'm in exactly the same position as you. I am so frustrated with Virgin Active. As far as I am concerned they are in breach of contract as the diamond membership was for life. They argue that my contract was taken out with the club in question and said membership has since been withdrawn.

May be ask this on customer service forums or something as it is more related to your contracts.
