Buying a second car, what happens now?

I've seen a cheap tatty banger which I think will suit me fine for a year or so. It's a private sale and the seller is local and known. What's the process from now on in?
My 'main' car needs a lot of work doing and I am about to sorn it until I can get it sorted - a couple of months or so, but will still keep as my main car and use the banger in the interim. Should I transfer my insurance to this one (incl my lengthy ncb?) or is that even possible or do I take out additional policy for the banger? And what happens about tax?
In the past I've bought through a garage who have sorted this all out for me, but I think some of the rules have changed recently too so I don't know where to go with it. I'd like to collect it this weekend if poss.
Thanks

If you SORNd the old car and its parked on private land in a safe place you can transfer the insurance over. Depends if you need the car to be insured in case anything happens to it.
When you SORNd the old car the tax will be refunded automatically, You will get a check in a week or so. You need to tax the new car as any tax on it is not transferable from the previous keeper.
So instead of sorting insurance then driving it away you sort the insurance and the tax and drive it away. If its a dealer they can still sort it for you. If you do it yourself make sure you use the number on the new keepers slip.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
That was quick thank you. Yes the old car is at the repairers and will remain there for the foreseeable future. So I will cancel the insurance on that one then and start afresh with the banger.
In terms of tax do I just ring dvla and they will sort it straightaway? I believe it goes from month to month so if I have it this weekend it will still have a few days of the old owner's tax anyway. At least I can get it home then. I want to pay monthly as I did with my old car.
Sounds as if I might not get it this weekend then, I expect these things take a while. I may just ask him to bring it over and leave it at my home anyway. Thanks for the guidance.0 -
Is your main car so cheap that you can leave it uninsured?0

You will have to tax it immediately the tax is not transferable to the new owner any more.0 -

It's worth about £2k when it's working but it's thoroughly dead at the moment. The garage belongs to a friend and he's going to sort it out as and when. Quite a bit needs doing. Should I insure it then? It's safely locked away.0 -

If you are planning on having your main car uninsured (legal, however will the garage cover you in the event it gets stolen/catches fire?) I would swap your insurance over to the banger, and then back again once your main car is sorted, expect 'admin' fees for doing this, in my experience £25 or so each way.
I would call your insurance company up and ask them, there may be an option to insure your main car for fire and theft and swap the main policy over.0
