From the middle of this year the paper part of the license will stop being issued and you will only have the photocard and the online version.

Just wait until June or July this year when the paper counterpart becomes obsolete. Saves you money not having to order a replacement.

If all he has is one SP30, then, with most insurers, it has never needed declaring, as many application forms state you can ignore
parking and one speeding conviction, provided no period of disqualification was imposed

I have just been charged extra on a policy I have recently taken out with Hastings for not declaring an SP30 from 4 years and 6 months ago because I didn't think I needed to tell them.
They asked to see a copy of the driving license and it was on there as it's a paper one.
They charged me I think it was about £28 for the offense and £25 administration.

How will they check offences over 4 years old when the paper licence has gone, I image they will still ask for 5 year declaration period?

Online. When they offer insurance, insurers will ask for licence details. Having the database accessible to insurers is intended to prevent mistakes and fraud.

That's my point. If it's older than 4 years for an sp30 or in my case an sp10 it won't appear in endorsements section online but swift cover will still ask me for previous convictions/endorsements from the last 5 years at renewal but how will they check if the DVLA won't keep a record after 4?
