EON Direct Debit Review

Hi all, just looking for a bit of advice and clarity on the following.

We moved into our first home last September and stuck with EON as they were the previous supplier for both electricity and gas. For the interim and to ensure we covered the winter bills we were put on the standard tariff at £101 per month direct debit. Having come through the winter period we are £30-£40 in credit.

Yesterday I received a notification of our direct debit being reviewed and they want to drop us from £101 to £37 per month until October 2015 at which time it will be reviewed again. This sounds fantastic but when I look at their forecast usage it clearly shows each of those months being over £40, as such we would be underpaying and also building up no credit for the next winter period.

Is there anything we need to be wary of?

I've had mine dropped from £101 to £51 this month too. You can readjust it yourself if you think you need to pay more. I checked mine on the sliding scale and it looks about right for my usage.

The only reason I can think as to why they'd want to you to accrue a debt would be if they're planning a massive price hike in October (when their new plans come out) which might prevent you moving to another supplier if you find yourself in debt with them. Just keep an eye on usage and adjust where necessary.

If you know what your DD should be then put the difference in an interest paying account. EOn allowed me to get £700 in debt, did I care - NO - the amount I knew I needed to pay each month was put away safely and when after 12 months they realised they put my DD up to recover the debt over another 12 months ;) You be in charge of the budget not them.

The only thing you need to do is get yourself on a cheaper tariff NOW !

    Good morning Swinder,

Do you manage your account online? If not it's a really good idea to register. It will mean you can take much more control of your billing and your Direct Debit payments. There's the Direct Debit manager that will let you adjust your payments yourself.

I also just wanted to double check your account has been billed up to accurate reads?

When you're online have a look at the best deal for you and make sure you're getting the best tariff. You may also want to pop your usage in to comparison website to see how we stack up.

I wouldn't want to see you get in to debit balance, so using the online account you can enter reads and produce bills and balances and adjust the Direct Debit accordingly as things do change throughout the year.

If you need any help though, please just ask. Always happy to help :D

    Morning Helena,

I do manage my account online and my last meter readings were submitted yesterday so they should be up to date.
I had a quick look at the best deals for me and it comes up with the same tariff for £76.22 which is obviously over double what the review insists I should be paying.

I just fail to see why the review would want me to pay less than the forecast usage other than to sting me of course... Not only that but it includes October 2015 in the review and it tells me that I am forecast to use just £10 worth of gas and electricity in that month which is how the balance is suppose to even itself out....

As for the direct debit manager... You can't really manage much when the adjustments can only be increased/decreased by £7 without ringing up and setting it that way.

Thanks ever so much for the extra info.

I'm only really guessing here, but we'll have some average daily consumption for the property from last summer, so this will be used in calculating the amount.

However, I fully understand we don't have your usage for the property for a full year.

It sounds like we're trying to get the account to a zero balance for the October review. So summer months, less usage, add on the credit balance is giving us a lower Direct Debit figure.

There's a couple of options really, either increase the payments now and see how you go, or leave them as they are and keep fully on top of the bills, or even produce monthly bills via your online account and again see how things go.

I'm sorry you haven't had much joy with the Direct Debit manager, but glad you've done a best deal for you and the account is up to date.

If you need me to look at the account though, please ask.
