Get married. Then life would be straightforward.

haha yes... of course you get to have all the arguments afterwards in the divorce courts instead of performance.

One of the main reasons not to get married is that you don't want to pool your money. One of the main reasons not to want to pool your money is that you don't see this lasting for ever.

Conversations about finances can really throw the cat among the pigeons. It's easy to assume that you're both on the same page about your relationship and your future until you start thinking about this sort of stuff - and what it means - in detail.

As somebody said upthread, the argument works both ways. If it's reasonable to say "why should I care about your pension when I might not get to help you spend it?" then it's equally reasonable to say "why should I reduce my retirement income in order to subsidise your rent, when you might be a distant memory by then?"

I don't know what the answer is, given that they're already living together and have a child.

It's never a requirement to pool money when you get married, it's only a requirement to share when you get divorced.

That should be in bold print on the marriage application.

If I'd known it before I got married, I wouldn't have done. We never pooled our money while married.

    That's what I meant, although I appreciate it's not what I said. :)

We pooled our money before and after marriage.

And if your partner wont share money with you, you should never ever have a child with them.
