I appreciate that, I just wanted to hear other peoples experiences with their cars being written off and if I could understand this some more. The engineer has not as of yet.

Keep on at your insurers to get the engineer out. If its borderline, they might listen to your preference of repair or write-off.

It sounds like you are at fault so prepare to suffer the loss of your excess. Also, if you don't have replacement car benefit on your policy, it may be in your interest for it to be written off and settled quickly. Substantial repairs can take time.

There was a bit of a debate on another thread, from what you describe, you at the rear will take the claim.
As for beyond economical repair? It's often 50% of the street value, tbh I wouldn't want a vehicle that has had front end damage back.

50%?, i'm talking from 'down the pub' talk, and a few years ago as well but I was under the impression it was more 80%?

A few years ago we had our car damaged by a 3rd party, relatively small dent/paint loss on a door, garage A, who are used by insurance companies quoted about £1000, garage B who are locally very well thought of, and did a great job quoted £250. So as that car was worth about £2000 the insurance company would have written it off for a small dent/paint loss that cost £250 for a great repair? No wonder insurance is so expensive!!!
  • It's amazing how people who run into the back of someone else somehow believe it's not their fault.

20mph is ample to cause £5k and airbags can deploy at <20mph in the right circumstances.

    Hat ready?

Arrrr yes, driving square into a concrete block they can deploy at very low speeds. I dont believe this was the case here though.
