Someone I know has just moved into a premises to use as as a photography studio. It is electric only (storage heaters I believe) As there arent any previous calculations is it just pot luck with an energy provider or is there something they should be taking into consideration?

They will have a current supplier .
First find what tariff then find a cheaper tariff .
Past usage is not a guide to the tariff only the estimated annual amount .

Read the meters (Day rate, Night rate).

Do it every day for a week, say.

Electricity (and/or gas) supplier/tariff selection for a small business is more complicated than for a domestic customer

Hopefully, this thread on the small biz board should assist :)

Make a reasonable estimate. No point spending hundreds of pounds extra just because you want to wait a year to make sure you don't pay tens of pounds extra (and a variation in weather one season will make that estimate an estimate anywhence).

Caveat: being business contracts you are correct you do have to be a bit more careful - choose one that is not too long.
