Regular Savings Account

Which is the best account to put £50 per month for a long term basis,eg 6 years, it will be in the wife's name as she is a non-taxpayer.

Comments

  • Putting the money into one account for six years might not be as good as putting it into the best account NOW and then changing it as an when another account becomes available which is significantly better than the one you happen to be in.
Many accounts have a "Bonus" for a while after which the rate is less atttractive.

OK,So, which account that is currently available at present would in your opinion be the best at this particular point in time?
  • One of the regular savings accounts from Abbey or Halifax. Read the T&Cs very carefuly and be prepared to move it in a year's time!

The answer changes on an almost daily basis.
Abbey 6.5% has about the best headline rate but I do not like the terms and conditions much.

My most recent account was 5.8% from Nottingham to 01 Dec 05.
This is not now open to newcomers.
It also depends on how closely you wish to watch for rate changes.
Even though your wife is not a tax payer she might be one day so consider an ISA but in my experience they do not offer the most competitive rates.
Almost any account paying about 5%+ would do at present.

    Try http://www.moneysupermarket.com/

Watch it though - some of the headline grabbing rates have conditions attached e.g. rate only applies for six months.
