residents only parking?

Hi all,
Basically I have moved into a quiet little village and opposite my house there is a small layby with a sign saying residents only parking ( doesn't state you need a permit). Every time I have parked there I receive a note on my windows saying it's for residents only...I am a resident so this this because I live opposite the road or because they are busy bodies with nothing better to do than harass new people that move into the village? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou

Leave a note on your windscreen saying "Resident, No ...."0

Thanks

I have posted notes through a few doors telling them I'm not breaking the law and instead of leaving anonymous notes to knock on...looks like we may have a few irate neighbours oops lol0 -
Find out from the council if the layby is private or council.
If private then you may actually be upsetting a landowner somewhere. However, if the layby is part of the council maintained highway (as is more likely) then they can bog off.Je Suis Cecil.0 -
As above are these private tickets, or council?
could you provide a photo of the sign?
is the lay-by public highway?
Does the layby exist on google street view/google maps?
Is a permit normally required to park in the lay-by, in other words have you noticed other vehicles parked there displaying a permit? From the Plain Language Commission:

Hey guys
It's defo council, our landlord even told us we were ok to park there. I think they are just nosey old parkers with nothing better to do tbh0 -
As a thought are you taking up a parking spot that some one else has been using for a period of time?
if so some diplomacy may be a bit better a plan then confrontation.
I have a similar ongoing problem with parking as new people move in and out. They all (mostly ) presume that they can legally park , which legally they can ..... morally not so ..... friction then ensues for a period till some sort of sense / agreement happens.
So demanding your legal rights in situations such as this is not all ways best....
good luck whatever you decide...

It may be better to park elsewhere if possible.
Its a question of weather or not its worth the agro with your new neighbors.
you have said theres a sign stating residents parking only.
is this a sign provided by the local council/highways authority? is this sign on public land?
If its on public land it may be worth parking elsewhere, and then submitting a complaint a month or so down the line to get the sign removed.
If you cna provide a google map link then it may be useful as others on here may be able to advise further. From the Plain Language Commission:
