double council tax?

Options
Hey guys

I love at 2 properties. I own one and the other one belongs to my wife's fathers. I get my wage slips and some bank statements etc sent there as a few days a week I stay there.

I'm on council tax for my own house which I own. Do I have to be on council tax on the other house too? Although my wife's father pay for the tax.

Does your Wife's Father live at the other house you love in or are you using it as a second home?
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

As long as he doesn't get a single person discount you should be ok as you appear to be more than just an occasional visitor based on it being your second home.

I would say you both have your own properties that you class as your main homes. The 25% discount your Father-in-Law receives shouldn't be a problem.

You are fine to stay at your father in law's property without it affecting his council tax charge as long as that property doesn't become your 'sole or main residence'. If it becomes your 'sole or main residence' then it may affect his council tax charge, depending on the exact situation, and he would need then need to advise the council accordingly that you were resident.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Your FIL may get investigated if he is receiving any means tested benefits because it will look as if someone else is living at the address.

If he isn't happy to explain the situation and hope the DWP believes him, get all your post sent to your address.
