Want to Learn to Drive - Advice?

I'm in my forties, have never driven but feel I should (finally) learn so any advice or pointers?

I have always used public transport and commute to work by bicycle so not completely a road neophyte (neither am I colour blind, do stop for red lights...).

Already have a provisional license photo ID and guess easiest option would be to go with someone like the AA but would prefer to look at a smaller local learner driving instructor but who?

Cheers.

Do you know anyone with older children who may have learned to drive in the last couple of years?

I would always choose a local guy rather than an overpriced company that only add the extra costs for the branding.

Have 1 - 3 trial lessons first, Its possible the instructor came recommended and was great with everyone you know, yet their style of teaching does not suit you. So dony pay for 10 lessons etc and find you dont get on.

The best way would be going by local recommendations.

The true is everyone will recommend the instructor they passed with. And it doesn't matter if they had driven before, how many lessons they had or had extra driving with family member.

Are you on Facebook by any chance? I would join local Facebook community and ask there. Then you will see who is recommended by most people. It will help you to choose driving school.

Remember, you can always change driving instructor if you are not happy with him/her.

Once you've started, keep going until you've got your license. If you get discouraged, don't stop, redouble your efforts and get back out driving.

I'm probably about your age, although I passed my test at 17 when there were far less cars on the road.

If I had to learn now - I wouldn't bother. With no experience behind me, I think I'd find the whole thing horrendous these days.
