How do I cancel Car Tax DD?

Hi everyone, I'm hoping this is the right board.

Our Car Tax ran out on 31/12/14 so we decided to then start paying by DD from the renewal date. That is all set up and payments are going out.

Unfortunately OH and the kids were in a car crash a week passed Thursday and the car is a write off (OH and kids are ok)

How do we go about cancelling the car tax payments for that car? or will the DVLA automatically do it when they get the "write off" part from the V5?

Thanks

We don't have the car though? the insurance company has it (they have probably crushed it or whatever they do to it)

We have sent a part of the V5 off to DVLA (as told to by car insurance) and the rest of the V5 has gone to the insurance company, will this be enough for DVLA to automatically stop the car tax or do we need to physically ask them too??

Also does anyone know if we pay for a month in advance or in arrears? the car was declared a write off about 5 days ago, so does that mean the car tax payment that came out at the start of march covered the whole of march? or will it be aprils payment that covers march?

    Thanks

You pay in advance, so the tax is already paid for March.

DVLA should stop the payment when they receive the documentation, but it would be a good idea to cancel the DD with your bank as well. That way, [STRIKE]when[/STRIKE] if DVLA are their usual inefficient selves and try to take April's payment you won't be chasing them for months trying to get a refund!

Yes it will automatically stop provinding you sent off the V5C/3, if you have online banking no harm in cancelling that way also.

The payment you paid beginning of March is for March only.

Hi yes we sent the V5C/3 to DVLA last Friday recorded delivery and the rest went to the car insurance company by recorded delivery

Great thank you, I will cancel the DD just to make sure

as for the SORN comments, we have no car left to SORN and it has been signed over to the car insurance company anyway, so I am a it confused by those comments? Xx

ok , normally when you sell a car and the v5 goes to the new owner 1: your DD would stop and 2: any full mths of tax (if you had taxed it for 6/12mths) would be returned.

yours is a funny situation , the insurance co have the V5 , not you , normally its you that sends the V5 off

that section did you send to the DVLA , ?

We sent part three to dvla, I can't remember the heading of it but we had to put the car insurance companies name on it

Then oh signed another bit I guess signing the car over to the insurance company and the v5 (minus part three) went to the insurance company.
