A good company is an RICS surveyor that is on the major lenders' surveyor 'panels'.

Most folks use the surveyor recommended by their agent, as the agents are unlikely to waste time with a surveyor whose reports get rejected by the lenders, post-offer.

Typicals I would suggest are Shepherd, DM Hall, but the usual suspects may differ in your area.

Thanks Googler. I have found one locally who is very reasonable - about £130 cheaper than estate agents. He is RICS. He says he doesn't usually have problems but can not guarantee it. Should I be wary or is this standard spiel they give you?

    Cheers.

You can go with it but you may find that a potential purchaser will come back to you to ask you to contribute to the cost of another report if the surveyor isn't acceptable to their lender.
