OP still has not clarified if he is an owner or tenant.

    Either way, bonkers!

Clearly a tenant with a dodgy landlord... Is it only me who this is obvious to?

My last rental had wall sculpting material (artex?) in big swirls and they'd chosen a colour similar to old fag stains. When the cupboard started to fall off the wall and I reported it the LL and his wife turned up unannounced and proceeded to take over two hours to fix it back up again.... it was a studio flat and I don't have "people skills" so this made for an excruciating time.

Having stuck it back on the wall they told me "don't put anything heavy in it, no cans"....

So I didn't really use it for much after that.

A previous neighbour had a gas safe test while I was visiting her.
The 'GSR' bloke turned on the oven, checked that it had actual flames and went away.

I was so incensed I wrote to the landlord for her and made him get a proper job done. It was a scathing letter where I threatened all sorts of dire consequences if it wasn't done properly next time and any time after that. And if that 'GSR' bloke ever showed his face again I was going to have him arrested for endangerment/pretending to be someone he clearly wasn't/false representation/attempted murder etc.
Funny now if course but not funny last year for neighbour and her children.
    63 mortgage payments to go.

Your letter sounds more ridiculous than scathing. I'd love to see you dial 999 to report the engineer for attempted murder! :rotfl:

Was my intention to let GSR know that someone was pretending to be registered. Whether they would do anything, well I dunno, however I think its called corporate manslaughter or like that when someone dies as a result of such ineptitude. And that incident was very inept.

When my LL sent someone round to check the boiler, he gave me his registration card, and I looked it up to double check he was in fact registered. Much easier. If he hadn't been, I would simply have refused to let him near the boiler.

Thanks, everyone. I have a thing where I often feel I'm the only person in the world going through a particular situation, but it's helpful to know I'm not. Though I do feel bad for some of the posters on here, makes me realise how my situation isn't too bad.

I'm a tenant. I've been here nearly a year, and plan on staying several more. I can't stand living in new build, wafer thin walled places, I had that for nine hellish months in my previous place, so finding this place was brilliant. It's a small detached house, referred to as a ''flat'', a minutes walk from the city centre but as quiet as a ghost town from five o'clock onwards (obviously a bit of city hustle and bustle during the weekdays). So having to fix up a few things isn't a hardship for me. Better than having to soundproof a new build! I'm not going to spend too much, as I know I am just a renter. It's finding a balance, like one poster said.

The two clowns are the guys that landlord gets in to do repairs. They're also fixing up the place behind me presently. They're clowns, from their workmanship, and just general behaviour. One of them looks as dodgy as hell, the stereotypical cowboy builder.

My landlord recently had to shell out around £2200 to get my boiler replaced. He had opted for a cheap one to begin with, karma acting on behalf of all abused tenants there!

Another possibility is that a previous tenant carried out some or all of the diy jobs and the LL couldn't afford the time or money to fully rectify it, except to make sure it wasn't a health or safety hazard. It does happen. Even if the T insists his dad is a qualified joiner...Still, you live and learn.

LL wont generally pay lots for work to be done. if he paid more, employed better, would you pay higher rent?
  • If you are confident you can get what needs doing done at a reasonable cost, that makes it worth doing to you, then its worth doing. A tenant is always going to do a better job if they have the skills (not a DIY Bodger) than a cheap repair person (as opposed to a properly qualified tradey) due to self interest.

But you do need to have the skills or a willingness and ability to learn. I've put kitchens in.., self taught, and passed as fit to use by a tradesperson. I paint better than most odd job men as I take the necessary time and care.., and sand down in between layers. Time restricted cheap odd job men don't have to meet the same criteria lol.
