Car- Voluntary termination

Recently I have just change my car, through voluntary finance termination. when handing the car to the auction, they assessed the car, the so called damage or wear and tear to the car came to £1500. i have now received a letter stating they want £790 for the wear and tear to the car.
The car is 7 years old and an ex-police vehicle.
The original term agreement with santander was for 42 months, I have had the car for two and half years paying over 50% of payments they wanted.
What is regarded as reasonable wear and tear of the hand back of a car that was already second hand to me?
how can they prove that any damage to the car was done by me when a lot of the dents and scratches were already on the car....ie small dent on the bumper and cable holes from police use have left on the lining of the inside roof?
I am a careful driver with no bumps and 15 years no claims.

Isn't £790 less than £1500? Or do you mean an additional £790 on top of the £1500?0

Can you prove that the dents and scratches were already on the car? I take it you had a huge discount when purchasing due to its shoddy condition.0
