Is there anyway to make it a birthday present for both of them from all members of the family? At least a contribution towards it?

Then saving £10 a week, the first room should have a new carpet before Summer. It's ages since I bought carpets, so I'm out of date on prices. We have laminate flooring as it is easier to keep dust free for my son, who has breathing difficulties.

Of course there are prices and prices. We have decided after many years to replace our laminate flooring downstairs and carpet to the stairs landing and three beds.

Laminate starts at 55p sq ft. Solid Oak fitted is £6.50 sq ft

Carpets also start at below 55p sq ft. to £6.00 sq ft and beyond.

Would make a nice Father's Day present.
  • Yeah agree with the present idea. I'm a bit skint myself but can afford to save 10 a week for my parents considering all they have done for me least I can do. Sister is going to help with 200 quid as well. I will get grandsons to chip in as well, they work so hopefully they will help.

My friend has a friend who is a carpet fitter. I phoned him and he said he will get us a good deal and fit it for free! Its their 47th anniversary in June so will get it all sorted for them by then. Thanks again all.

What a fantastic result - seems to be a happy little bunny.

Thanks for all suggestions and replies will look into everything for them.

Glad you've got the carpet sorted.

But do look into your parents' finances (if they are willing for you to do that) and make sure that they are getting all the benefits they are entitled to.

There are several benefit checkers that you can put their details into and it will give you an idea of what (if anything) they could claim.

I'm sure Age UK (is that what they're called now?) also do benefit checks.

£80 a week towards their rent? That's a huge shortfall they need to pay between the rent and their housing benefit allowance which would swallow up perhaps a third or so of a basic state pension. Plus paying towards their council tax?

Are you sure they only have a state pension and little in the way of savings? People who have to pay large sums towards their rent and full council tax are normally in receipt of extra income, like private pensions and/or capital over 6k (investments, savings)? Alternatively, they are living in a property far higher than their HB entitlement - could they more to a cheaper property?

Do a benefit entitlement check on them (Turn2us online benefit calculator) or perhaps Age UK can help to do this.

And if they are renting in the private sector, then why isn't the landlord replacing the carpets? They don't have an infinite lifespan.

Have they looked into applying for social housing? Nationally there is a shortage of social housing but some areas are oversupplied with social housing for elders.

Another option is a Credit Union - they are designed for low income savers and can give loans out that avoid the need for loan sharks.

It's £10k for those on pension credit.
