Reproduction 1930's front door

Hi
We are looking for a replica timber 1930's front door, with a single round/elliptical window (we will have a stained glass panel made).
We have found a few manufacturers but the prices seem very high (£900 upwards unglazed)
Just wondered if anyone has had a door made, where from, and approximate costs.
We have looked at reclaimed doors, but difficult to get one in our required size (78 x 30) as most seem bigger.
Thanks

If thats a bespoke made door then I would say thats reasonable........ 78"X30" is a standard size so you should be able to source a reclaimed one. If you can source one make sure its not twisted or bowed as you will really struggle to get it to work properly...
I would also mention that if your intending to replace the door frame as well then the work will need to be signed off by building control .....Any product that is a "one off" will be expensive, savings are made by manufacturing in volume.
If its something like this then I would be charging around £1200+vat and that wouldn't include the stained glass.

Thank you for this. Why would it need to be signed of by building regs? Just wondered as we had a new UPVC door and frame fitted a couple of years ago where we are now, and there was no mention (or visit ) of building regs....20 plus years as a mortgage adviser for Halifax (have now retired), and I have pretty much seen it all....:D0 -
Hi Martin,
If you just replace the door alone you can do that without needing to either have it signed off by Building control via a "building notice" or the work carried out by a FENSA registered company which is what you will need to do if you replace the door and frame.
Few carpenters,Joiners or small building firms are FENSA registered because only a small percentage of their work will be installing and its expensive to sign up to the FENSA scheme so they tend to get the work signed off via the "building notice" scheme. Most Upvc window/door companies will be FENSA registered so they sign off their own work.
So just to clarify if you replace just the door and not the frame then just do.If you intend to do the door and the frame you need to contact the council for a "building notice" or have the work carried out by a FENSA registered company and they will issue a certificate.. If you don't do one or the other problems can arise when/if you sell the porperty as you will be asked what work has been carried out.You could lie and say nothing but ,personally I don't think its worth the hassle.0
