PPI claim without ANY documents. Can it be done?

We took a mortgage with Abbey National in 1999 and we took PPI. We moved house in 2003 and changed the mortgage deal but stayed with Abbey. At the end of the mortgage deal (5 years I think) we switched to another lender and did not have PPI.

We no longer have any of the original documents from Abbey. Is there any chance that we could start a claim or is it likely that Santander (who took over Abbey National) will just reject it.

If you have no documents and no one else has any documents then its brick wall time. After all it is 16 years ago.

It wouldn't have been PPI anyway, it would have been mortgage protection (MPPI) usually considered a good thing, it meant you could pay your mortgage if you were off work, etc.

I would just move on to be honest.

  • Your right it was Mortgage Protection which I assumed was the same as PPI. I didn't think there would be much chance and it would only have been for a few years anyway so probably wouldn't have been worth the hassle.

    Thanks anyway.

Why do you think you would be entitled to your money back?
  • Because Martin said so :) and because I distinctly remember the feeling of being pressured/scared into taking the mortgage protection.

So how would you have kept up your mortgage payments (and thus stopped your house being repossessed) if you had lost your job or been off sick for an extended period?

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • My wife was also in full time employment and we would have been able to meet the payments on her salary. It would have been a struggle but we knew if one of us was out of work we could still afford it. Obviously if we were both out of work it would have been an issue.

I am not assuming that I am entitled to any refund but I was just asking the question in case there is a possibility that I may have a few £ out there with my name on them.
  • Get in touch with Santander and find out what they sold you, do not assume it was mortgage protection and therefore possibly suitable. Get the policy details and then consider whether the policy would actually pay out or was suitable for your financial circumstances at the time of the sale. If, after that you believe the policy was unsuitable then put in your complaint

Mortgage, electricity, water, gas, fuel, food etc all without one salary? If you can show you could afford all that for a period of 6-12 months without losing your home or running out of cash you could probably try and argue the MPPI would be unnecessary but realistically having your mortgage payments met would mean an affordable life without cutbacks.

...except for the fact that MPPI only pays out if you can't afford to meet your payments.

Its extremely unlikely that the policy documents exist after so many years.
    So dont hold your breath.
