A provisional date was set though.... so it is more than a simple quote. The company anticipated some sort of work on the specified date, and without being told then they would have gone ahead.
    ?
The OP gave suggested date, the business set a date when they could do it, not the customer, even though they had not been told they have the job. They should have checked to see if they had got the contract, sorry the business should not have gone off half cocked.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

. The strange thing is, they were heavily recommended by Check a Trader, where I got the original quote from.

Checkatrade were recently on Watchdog for dodgy and inaccurate reviews:

I would definitely take this further and make a complaint, as they have no right to be so abusive.

At least you know you went with the right company!!

    Was it a small trader?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Yes, very local and has been trading for over thirty years. He doesn't advertise and goes on word of mouth alone but is on "Which?" and is very highly rated on there. Some of our family recommended him. He was more expensive than the other quotes but I wanted somebody who was based nearby in case there were any issues.

    Luckily, there haven't been :)

Who would I make a complaint to? Checkatrade?

Well as soon as you had chosen the other company, it would have been good manners to let them know immediately.
On the other hand, them ringing you and being rude was totally out of order.

Actually I totally disagree with this, even if this is a provisional booking/quote the company should have kept on top of this to get confirmation the job was a go, even have the quote singed for acceptance. Maybe this should be a lesson for the company to make sure jivs are booked correctly.

Regardless of how you look at this it was unprofessional of them to phone and moan they didn't get the work.

On reflection I think you could be right that they should have checked, ie the onus is totally on them.
