    No - that was in the garage as they towed it round town to get a diagnosis and to get the engine to start at all - not while my OH was driving, as I said before that happened quickly

    No, the noise and leak didn't suddenly manifest itself in the hands of the current, repairing garage. You can argue until your blue in the face, but the car didn't have a massive water leak when it drove off the forecourt two months ago and, as you have been driving it during that time, the failure and noise is a new one. Get it fixed at a recommended, friendly, local garage, v/xs aren't exactly exotica and they are simple to fix.
