Ending an assured tenancy in social housing.

I have just found somewhere else to live after several problems with my housing association and the area I live in. I am planning to move in two weeks on 5th April 2015.
Now I pay rent weekly but the tenancy says I have to give a months notice.
I am an assured tenant but I thought notice goes on whatever your rent period is and ours is weekly. So should I not give one week notice?
I need to move asap as we are being harassed by the local teenagers and there have been stabbings happening on a regular basis and I have a four year old. Its just not safe and I can't afford to pay two more weeks rent and move out and pay the £982 my new land lord needs. I only earn £1600 a month. How do I pay bills????

I am afraid that with most social housing the notice is 1 month. However, they'll probably allow you to pay it in monthly instalments. I'd phone them and ask. And give notice sooner rather than later. Notice often starts by 1pm on a Monday.., but you'll have to check your tenancy agreement or the website for your HA. They usually give very clear details.
Can you negotiate your move in date on the new property?
Have you tried for a transfer or discussed this with the HA? Giving up a tenancy in social housing (assuming you are going into private rental) is going to mean compromises. Honestly.., think hard about this. I gave up social housing on a bad estate.., and really wish there had been another way. Private rental can work.., but I'd give anything to be out of it. And its quite common to have to move rather more often than most tenants would like.., with all the associated costs that go with that. And worrying about schooling for your son.0 -
28 days at least ending on end-of-weekly-period day. Which is usually but not always day before rent day.0

Thanks for the replies.
We just need to get out of here, its a nightmare. Last night we were up til 3am with dodgy goings on opposite our house, banging and crashing of stolen bikes being put in car boots by about 20 teenage boys. Then police turning up and them legging it, then us ringing the police only to get a total idiot on the phone who wasn't listening to a word we were saying.
Then this afternoon an officer from the HA turns up with no appointment knocking several times whilst looking round our front garden writing things down. Puts a note through our door then proceeds to look over our side gate into the garden and starts taking photographs over the gate. We have him on our CCTV doing all of this. His note said he had come to inspect our garden path which we had layed due to the original being cracked in several places.
Now this is the sort of thing we get daily and nightly, harassment from the HA and disturbance from the local teenagers and thieves and we are not sticking around to put up with it anymore. The photographs over our gate are the last straw.
I'm an honest working person who shouldn't be treated like this.0
