steam cleaners? Are they any good?

Are they any good? I know they do hard surfaces, but what are they like on carpets? Can you recommend an economical one?

Steam cleaners are good, my missus uses a Polti Vaporetta , it's expensive though. They do a great job of carpets and tiles etc.

I have a Morphy Richards Grimebuster, very similar to the Polti & various attatchements are available. I wouldn't be without mine as it really helps keep my pale coloured carpets looking good, as well as being great for many other jobs around the home.

I know Vax have started to do some steam cleaners & the price is reasonable, around £75 I think I've seen some for. Check out the bar pressure as this will indicate the strength of the steam power. Round about a 3-4 Bar is good.

Have a look on Ebay as you can pick up some good buys there.

Don't bother with the small or handheld version of any steam cleaner as they are pretty useless & you'll only waste your money.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

We have used an Earlex, from DIY chains, cost about £25 a couple of years ago. Does a very good job on carpets.

I've got this one too. Our bathroom has creme floor tiles and grout.
The grout looks a bit grubby in places ( only dust but it shows on creme)and I hoped the steam cleaner would clean. It hasn't really. If I use a mop and floor cleaner, tiles go smeary. Does anyone have any recommendation?

    Try using bleach.

I have a morphy richards grime buster as well. It is good but not fantastic and gets you hot and bothered if you use on a hot day. Did bring up my bathroom a treat but was still hard work, wiping and steaming at the same time. The woman on the demonstration didn't look as dishevelled as me when she was using it!! The more you use these things the easier it gets, practice makes perfect. Didn't buy it at full price luckily, managed to get it off Speed Auction for £20.50 with P & P, would have been disappointed if I had to pay full price which is about £75. Still useful though.

  • I managed to get a second hand Earlex for £12 and it seems to be fine. Its just a fag fixing it altogether and the carpet attachment handle isnt long enough for me. I am ordering another section. It seems to be good for spare parts.

Steam cleaners are brilliant for defrosting the freezer.

If you just want it for carpets, consider getting someone in. it only cost us £40 to have our living room, hall and dining room carpets steam cleaned professionally and they came up virtually as good as new.
