What difficulties are you having? The best way of removing it is to download the new version and run the setup file, then choose remove.
A window with following options will be displayed during the installation process:
Add/Remove Components - choose if you want to add/remove some AVG Free Edition component or reinstall the entire AVG Free Edition program.
Repair installation - this option repairs or reinstalls missing or damaged components of AVG Free Edition.
Uninstall - this option removes the AVG Free Edition program from your PC

I have recently moved over to sky broadband who supplied me with mcafee, i installed it and it slowed down my pc loads. I uninstalled it and went back to avg.

My advise stick with what you've got.

When it runs well, McAfee is better than AVG free, also it is more than just an antivirus so you only need the one program. If you have an oldish PC you wil notice it slowed down by McAfee, but a reasonable spec. newish PC should not notice much difference, remembering that McAfee does more than AVG. There are better security suites around, but not for the same price - free.

Was it the free or paid for version that you are trying to get rid of and have you downloaded the correct version again to remove it with? If it still won't go try completing an over the top install and then reboot and try to remove it again.
