Long Term Investment Strategy - Mark Shipman

Options
I would like to research the investing system Mark Shipman wrote about in his book Big Money Little Effort.

The basic strategy is investing in an index when its 30 week smoothed moving average is above the 50 week smoothed moving average. Results from 1957 in the S&P 500 is impressive but I would like to see if other indexes have the same performance.

To do this I will need to have access to customisable technical charts (from index inception or at least 20 years) where I can see when the index would be bought, when it would be sold (by comparing the smoothed moving averages) and thus the % increase/decrease during this period.

Is there a free resource that would allow me to do this? If not what is the best resource to use that I would have to pay for?
