IMO you can't go far wrong with DELL.

    off the shelf,
    cheap,
    work.
support manuals etc all avaialble online still even for old models.

My £180 outlet one from April 2008 still going fine, (insperon 530, dual core E4500 2.2ghz, 3gb ram 2x320g discs, DVD writer, media reader...)

Had the cover off, and a good clean of fans and heatsinks, silent again.

Depending on the PC the OP has there may be some life but probably not worth the bother, base units are so cheap.

last time I looked this place had all the ins/outs of the dell models

Not sure if they still do...

then I just loooked and waited for a decent spec on the outlet site, think it is harder now there are too many people looking and bots grabbing the good ones.
When the price is right with delivery/discounts you can get a bargain.

Thanks for that, very helpful ! There's such a lot of choice so this helps me narrow it down.

You might want to hang on bit for your purchase as Intel are introducing a very significant update to their processor line up from around June onwards to the end of the year so you could see some large discounts being offered around the Summer time and for the rest of the year as old stock gets dumped to make way for the new.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

There is always something new just round the corner.

plenty of cheap base units all year round as long as you don't want bleeding edge.

At the bottom end things don't change much on major releases, they change a bit all the time.

£200 base units will still be £200 might have a small processor upgrade but not much they allready have end of life CPU anyway. the processor price in a £200 unit is going to be £80max most likey £40-£60.

It's been like this for years at the bottom end they always cost about the same just the componant mix changes a bit as prices fluctuate.

When you can get deals on decent new kit like this:

    Just add OS

That's a £186 processor new (Xeon 1225v3 eq to i5-4460) and a £180 c226 chipset mobo , stock is getting dumped already by Lenovo.

Current one is 9 years old and I want a new one !

I don't need anything for gaming and I don't download films etc. I need it mainly for spreadsheets, docs, photos, music etc.

I have an iPad mini for use in my armchair in front of the telly (as you do !) so don't really want a laptop as my "main" computer.

SO, my question is what should I be looking for, how much/little do I need to spend and can anyone recommend a particular brand and/or model.

Similarly what should I avoid ?

Thanks for your help as always
