Hotel cancelled my room

Booked a hotel in New York in a deal we found on a comparison site, few were offering this deal, booked hotel, booked flights separate, next day we received email saying hotel was not available at the rate we booked anymore, offered an unsuitable alternative 50 blocks away from original hotel and want extra £300. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem and how they resolved this, did they get the original hotel back and can the company do this to us?

The email was from the hotel, or the comparison site?

Many hotels on comparison sites are "on request". Meaning the comparison site doesn't know availability. They send your request through and the hotel confirms within a set number of days.
The comparison site we use its very clear in their T&Cs that this is the case, leaving no grounds for them to honour your request,

Read the T&Cs about when the contract is formed, and what country's law governs it.

As above, most UK websites will delay formation of the contract until a later confirmation email or dispatch of the goods etc and so if that hasnt happened they can simply refund you and walk away.

You can always contact the hotel directly and see if they can do anything for you, at least that way they arent having to pay commissions to other companies.
