Do Barclays Debit cards work on trains - as mine does not !

I normally use my Natwest Debit card on the train to buy my tickets, but today I used (Or Tried to use) my Barclays debit card and the machine said 'Card not Accepted', after the embarrassment of that I paid with my Barclaycard, the guard did tell me that some cards are not accepted.

I just assumed that I could use it on the train, I have tried it in a cash machine tonight and it works fine, I phoned Barclays but I am not 100% sure they knew what I was talking about as the guy just said the cards are accepted everywhere.

Has anyone else had this problem on trains ?.

Thanks, It looks like I have the online type then, I might ask Barclays but I don't feel hopeful they would know or at least ask them how I get the other version that does work.

Ask them to upgrade to the connect debit card (You'll be on electronic connect at the moment).

Why do you buy your tickets ON the train? You can't get onto the platform here without a ticket in most stations, except small rural ones. The machines in the station should do online processing, unlike the one on the train.

Where I am only 2 or 3 stations within 10 miles have ticketing facilities. The rest you have to buy on board.

You can identify whether it is an online or offline card by looking at the card. I can't remember how with Barclays, but most banks their online only cards don't have raised numbers, and others are different colour numbers.

The online only Visa cards are typically issued to those who would have been issued an Electron card in the past.

Its a very small station, no ticket office and just basically a bus shelter, and 9 times out of 10 the ticket machine is out of order.

I can't really upload a photo of it, but its blue, contactless, has raised silver numbers and begins 4659 0131.

Just got back from the bank and they said they can't upgrade the card as it is a connect card, showed me a screen which said something like product holding, or customer holding or something like that and it said "Connect Card".

Advisor said the only other debt card they do is a Connect Electronic.

This is only partly correct, i.e. a card with non-embossed digits is most likely online. However, AFAIK some banks issue only embossed cards.

E.g. Online or Offline Natwest Debit card

You have the right card the. Sometimes the chip will randomly force a terminal to go online for security, your card should work fine next time.
