  • SBK brushwood killer. I think it's been outlawed, but it was good stuff. Or maybe ask a friendly farmer for something?

Or you could try repeated applications of Roundup. Also make sure you stop it coming in from where it was, again.

Ne careful though. Some of these things were pulled off the market for a good reason.

would it not be best to dig it out and keep patrolling for signes of it coming back? hard work but worth it.

Dig out the roots. Its hard work the first time, but worth the effort.

it'd just keep triming these back, they make great burglar & cat deterants and jam :)

We have the same problem, but I just trim them back regularly - keeping enough of the flowering stem close by to be able to reach over and pick the fruits when they are ripe. Apple and blackberry pie, yummy! (Apples from our own tree too).

I find it good therapy when I am in a strop to go out and hack the branbles back.....

Just what we do! Regular trimming keeps them in check! If you really want to get rid of them then regular close cutting will weaken the plant and use of a herbicide such as Glyphosate or Brushkiller should finish them off!!!

    Hi there...

Never really been much of a gardener but have a large-ish garden.

It got very over run with about 6 feet thick of brambles, which over the past few weeks I have managed to cut back and clear, however I know cutting them back won't be enough.

What is for the best - I did have a go at digging out the roots yesterday but they are very thick deep and twisty, is there anything els eI can do or put on them or is digging out the only way?

    Thanks in advance.

I nearly always dig them out followed up with a glyphosate weed killer for any residual growth. However, if you really want to hit it, and can wait a while for replanting, then try Rootout:

Dig as much out as you can and then get a systemic weedkiller on it - it will fight you but keep pulling and spraying and you will eventually win. I had loads on my allotment and three years on I am winning the battle. I still get it coming up but nowhere near like I used to.

  • I've had the same problem!

I am going to get a weed killer today and try and dig them up.

But on a side note, I've got a ton of brambles and hedge cuttings - if I douse them in petrol and throw an old (i.e. brown) tree on and set fire, will the greens/brambles evantually catch .. ?
