Worth Trying a PPI Claim?

Hi

I currently have no income, and it entered my head that maybe I should try a PPI claim.

The thing is I had credit card payment protection so long ago (about 2004) I'm not sure if it's possible to attempt a claim now?

I also had mortgage payment protection from around 2007 to 2013.

I chose to opt for the above payment protection schemes after listening the sales spiel, and it wasn't forced on me in any way.

Any advice would me appreciated.

Thanks

There is nothing wrong with having PPI. The issue is whether it was sold to you correctly or not. It sounds like you chose to have it. So, what would your complaint reasons be?

  • Yes I did indeed choose to have it. I thought the PPI claims were arising due to the way the product was sold, rather than issues with the product itself?

So what is your complaint about the way it was sold to you? Or are you just trying your luck?
  • Yes, just trying my luck. I could be wrong but I imagined most people making PPI claims were trying their luck too..

They are. But bearing in mind that you have stated you chose to have it of your own free will and it was not forced on you, what do you consider was the issue with the way it was sold?

    Hi Insider101

Personally I can't flag any issues with the way it was sold, as it was so long ago (can't remember) - I really thought it was the role of the PPI claims companies with their legal knowledge to do that.

Which is exactly what the scamming cold callers want you to think. But PPI misselling is not a legal matter, they are not lawyers and don't have any legal knowledge. Most of them will just send a template letter falsely alleging allsorts, many of which are directly contradictory or just plain nonsense (claiming the sales person said things when it was an Internet sale etc..)

The best thing I can suggest is have a look at the guidance on this and other sites which indicate what might constitute misselling and see if anything applies to you. But if you are proposing to make a complaint against someone it is really up to you to give reasons for your complaint.

I just got a payout from Barclays, from a policy cancelled in 2004. The issue for me was that it was suggested to me when I opened the card as a full-time student - when I graduated my temo job ended and I thought the I surance I had taken out would cover me. I was told it did not, as this wasn't a 'redundancy'. Might something like this be the case for you? It was strongly suggested to me at the time that any payments would be covered.
  • Hi Mippy

Thanks for the reply. Did you manage to sort out the grounds for the complaint yourself, or did a PPI claims company help you with that?

    Thanks

If you look at the FOS form, that will give you an indication of the sorts of things you can look at. Most claims companies either use the FOS form or their badged version of it.
