Personal website - Advice

I have decided to set up a personal website.
Many years ago I had one, it was hosted free by my ISP but that service is no more and when it went I let my site lapse.
It's nothing of much interest to anyone but a few friends and on-line contacts who share interests.
A page showing the data from my weather station.
A log of my boat trips so that friends can follow my progress if they want. I may even start a ships blog.
Some Linux Wiki stuff as well as a couple of how to pages, getting the weather station up and running on a Raspberry Pi, that sort of thing.
A quick Google shows that there are free options but it's been so long that I'm way out of touch and would appreciate people's views on the way to go.
Free or paid for?
Your thoughts are very welcome.

Do you want your own domain name or not fussed ?Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0

I'm pretty flexible. I'm not trying to get loads of hits or rank on Google. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
I'd get a domain name if you're even half-considering it, just because it's so cheap. I pay about £3 a year, I think.
I managed to find a free web host for my personal site. It's still up, but I don't think they still offer the free hosting package.
If you can find a free host, why not give it a go and switch to a paid one if the free one doesn't do what you want?0 -
Buy a domain name and use wix dot com.
Easy to use, similar to the likes of PowerPoint etc.

Godaddy has a £1.00/month ex vat offer including free domain name, watch out though it's a nasty renewel price of £4.99/mo ext vat after the 12 months so up sticks and move after that.
I'm not aware of any caveats, any godaddy users here who can advise ?Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -

Thanks but I'm not interested in companies that use that tactic in the hope you'll just forget and pay up.One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -

I've previously used these guys - very reasonable hosting (£35 a year) and you can do pretty much whatever you want on their servers

You get a .uk domain with that too0 -
