How many shows waste time with a pre-credits intro, than even more blah blah blah, before they actually get to the action?

Repeating the 'coming up' phrase really gets my goat, as I think viewers have a good idea of what's on!

HH quite bad too, imo, teasing several stories..

Most of these types of show are the same, even the likes of Homes Under The Hammer.

They pad the show by showing the auction then meeting the buyers, then showing the "meeting the buyers" bit again when going to the post-renovation part. There's really no need for it - it's purely to pad the show length at minimal cost. (If they cut it all out, they could probably include a 4th property within the same show length).

Consumer shows are the same too (Don't Get Done, Get Dom etc.)

"Coming up next is brightonman123's response to bod1467's response to brightonman123's vent and perhaps a few hearty thank you's for all round... just after the break, so dont go away." Repeat 10 times and you can have your own TV show! :p

As said, its pads the programme but also with the programme recaps and the coming ups its for sales to other countries/networks where they put in a dozen extra sets of adverts.
  • I came across a a 'neighbours from hell' type programme a few days ago. They started to take you through someone's problem with their neighbours, then showed what was happening and just as it was getting interesting... went to another house. Then started the intro, current situation, again it stated to get interesting and... switched to another story. Four times they did this - why can't they just stick with one story from start to finish, then move onto the next one?

I did watch a US programme some time ago. The format was - intro to programme, then telling us what is about to happen, then the actual content, then a recap of what we've just seen, what's coming up next - adverts - again, what's coming up and finally a bit more content. Quite ridiculous.

The reality of TV in 2015 is that there are a huge number of channels, advertising revenue (or license fee) has shrunk in real terms over the years and has to spread thinner, so you get more made-by-the-yard 'formatted documentary' (Come Dine With Me, etc) and clip shows (Craziest Fools, RudeTube, Police BlahBlah, etc). The market now has to be international also, so has to cater for different jurisdictions allowing different quantities of adverts, so have padding and placeholders for them. An ostensibly 30' TV show in the US has a content run time of maybe 20'30" including recaps and teasers.

    Agree!

Some of the shows on Channel 5 (e.g. CSI etc) are listed as an hour but are only 39 minutes on catch up! Also, even repeats of old ITV programmes that used to fill hour long slots (including the adverts) are now "longer" than they used to be.
