Lapland Day Trip

Has anyone been to Lapland for the day with Thomas Cook or Thomsons? Or have you been on the 3 night stay, what does anyone think, do you get to do everything in a day. I am thinking of taking my 5 year old niece. Any advice would be great.

  • Hello. I took my nieces 12 years ago on a day trip and it was wonderful. They were 9 and 5 and they still talk about it today. I went through Travel Counsellors and they arranged a trip to a small village just north of Rovaniemi. It wasn't the Santa Claus village or the theme park: it was very low-key and authentic. We did husky-dog rides, reindeer rides, an arctic ceremony and then juice and pancakes in a little, remote pancake house (with no merchandise for sale!). Then we were driven by reindeer sleigh to see FC in a small wooden house. It really was magical and we even saw the aurora borealis! It was a long day, but very do-able. I think given the choice, I would have opted for a longer stay. Hope that helps.

I went on the day trip about 10 years ago, it was fantastic. I was with my brothers who were 4, 8 and 10 at the time. We went on a reindeer sleigh ride, a husky sleigh ride, a snowmobile, sledging, had a folk tail in a hut with a Finnish woman, fed ok food (it's scandanavian so a bit salty!)and finally a walk in candle lit woods to find father Christmas before some hot chocolate and fun in the snow.

I'd definitely recommend it, and you don't need more than a day.
  • I have not done a day trip but I have been to Lapland five times for a week each time. I have travelled with Inghams and independently.
There is plenty to do in a week (we don't ski) and it's much better value.
