Appeal debt collector?

Sorry if this thread covers previously covered things. I've done a search but can't see a thread that might answer this question.

I received a parking charge notice from Amtrak Security Services at the Falmouth Maritime Museum back in October. I sent them a letter at the time explaining that I had been 12 minutes over the 4 hour paid for period, that the carpark was only half full at the time so they had not incurred losses by my presence and sending them a cheque for £6.10 in settlement. This was £1.10 for 1 hour of parking, and £5 for their costs. I realise now that this wasn't the best course of action, but it made sense to me at the time!

They returned the cheque with a letter insisting on full payment, which I ignored on the advice of a solicitor friend. I also ignored a subsequent letter telling me that costs had risen and I now owed them £160.

Today I received both a phone call and a letter from a debt collection agency. During the phone call I confirmed my name and address, as I wasn't immediately aware who I was speaking to, but then refused to enter into any further discussion. The letter is requesting immediate payment of £100 owing, plus £12.50 admin charge.

However, there is a paragraph in the letter that says 'the driver has 14 days to settle or challenge the parking notice.' Is it worth me challenging it at this stage, and if so how do I do that? All the appeal info I can find seems to be for earlier appeals.

I realise that I should have done things differently from the start! Is it too late to sort this out?

TIA

This should have been challenged at the time, but as this didn't happen you are in the 'ignore' stage of this.

If all you are doing now is dealing with a debt collecting agency (DRP+?), just ignore them. See the NEWBIES FAQ sticky, post #4.
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.
