buildings ins but not living there.

Am about to move out of my home and in with someone else.
Plan to leave my ( grown up) kids in the house I am leaving.
Now they will have to sort out contents insurance, but as its still mortgaged, I need building cover.
Looked at all the usual insurance comparison sites and options are
I live in it
Holiday home
Empty

So does I live in it cover me as its family living there? Or do I need some specific cover They won't be paying rent either so can't go for LL cover.
63 mortgage payments to go.

Have you tried asking your current Building Insurers if they will offer cover?

That should be your first port of call as they're more likely to help you than anyone else as you've been paying them a premium and they know your history.

The bigger Insurers eg Aviva and Direct Line etc are more likely to help than the smaller companies.

I've dealt with quite a few of these situations, Insurers tend to either just note their records & not increase the premium or increase the premium to roughly what someone of your kid's age would pay but allowing your no claims bonus or refuse to offer any type of cover.

Your children will normally need to arrange their own contents insurance but this will not normally cover your contents left in the house eg furniture and carpets.

If you struggle to find cover, try a local broker (Not Swintons) who will be able to arrange it usually on the first two options I suggested

I did think that my self but seems not as no rent will be paid, not even peppercorn.

Anyway was going to post a reply that the insurance company have quoted me £85 a year for the building insurance. I am not leaving much of my own stuff here and contents insurance won't be my problem once I have moved out.
Oh and was admiral that gave me that quote. Not bad I thought.
Just really happy to know its easy enough to do after all my searching online

    Cheers for the help

What sum insured have you selected as that's an incredibly low premium for that type of risk.

It's very very important that the amount you insure for is for an amount at least the cost of rebuilding the property and including the costs of clearing the site and professional fees.

The cost can be more than the value of the house in some areas of the country

    Rebuild cost 120k
House worth circa 100k if sold on open market.( does this figure matter?)

Rebuild cost appears to be same/similar whoever I ask. Did ask my local favourite builder late last year and he said around the same. This is Oop north where everything is dirt cheap.

So does £85 a year sound better now?

    For info
Several years of building and contents insurance, the building part has been around £65/70 a year, so this quote seemed to reflect any added risk by me not being there.

Cheers dacouch I really want to get this right.

It's a remarkably cheap deal for your situation.

I would recommend you either ask them to confirm in writing they have noted the correct circumstances of your house or you put it in writing to them and send by recorded delivery. That way if there are ever any queries then you have it in writing
