I will Rain Shadow. I watched my friend do it last time but need to run through it myself with him some time so that I am confident I can do it.0

They tried fitting new tyre but wheel is out of shape - oval. So I need new wheel. Going to be about £500. They are going to keep the old wheel and tyre a it is clearly impact damage - for evidence.
Now I have to cycle to the spot and take pics. I hope I can find it!
Feel like crying but garage has been very nice and said it is clear impact damage and not extra costs of running the car. ie cos I am so upset spending so much on a car that is worth so little.:(
That's motoring though isn't it.0 -
Well my friend suggested I get them to put the spare on, I pay for work they've done and the new tyre and then take it somewhere else as £500 is a bit steep for such an old car. I did say to them I'd rather not have a brand new wheel but they want to go ahead (they think the council will pay up but what if they don't?!).
I am taking it away on spare wheel today and will get a second opinion.
I've also heard bad things about the guy who owns that garage from my friend who grew up here and went to school with him. So I am starting to have my doubts. They have a reputation for the hard sell basically and I do feel a bit bullied into paying £500 so I'm not going to.0 -

Check ebay for wheels. Quite a lot available and, depending on where you are, some real bargains (set of 4 for £60 just ending near Gloucester). Ones that are willing to post seem to start around £70 inc delivery.
As for checking the rest of the suspension, get the spare on and see if it drives ok. The chances are it will, in which case buying a wheel and learning to change it will save you around £400 over what the garage has quoted.
Then find another garage. Or buy a Haynes manual cos you're obviously up to maintaining it yourself from what you've done in the past - you just need a bit of a prod in the right direction and the confidence to do so0 -
Thanks Joe. I'm quite upset and have given them poor feedback (for bad advice and not listening to what I wanted) on their survey. I have noted that the mechanics there are good cos I do like them and get sense they are a bit 'under the thumb'.
What do you think about the pothole pics?
I do have Haynes. Just need the confidence. Maybe I can find a course. ☺0 -
BTW even though I asked them to put the spare on when he phoned me to say it was ready for collection he said that they had moved the front (faulty) wheel to the back, with the new tyre on it, and just put the old back on in the front rather than following my request and using the spare. He said because the spare is not full size, that is incorrect. It is labelled as a spare with lower speed limit but the police have told me previously I can drive as normal on it and in fact I have done so for over 300 miles when I had to.
it annoys me that he didn't check but just made this decision about my property and went ahead without checking why I wanted that. So then I had to pay for the new tyre and it is now on a faulty wheel. How do I know how faulty the wheel is?
My other option is to take to a place locally where the engineer can check the wheel and see whether it can be repaired. Cost for just checking is £52.
I will upload a pic of it - you can see a nick on one side but that's about it.0
