They still haven't found cause of engine light being on but they are concerned it is more serious eg pistons? They are doing compression test in couple of hours.
We are up to at least £300 so far and they haven't found cause of emissions failure yet - and misfiring. But it always seems to fail on emissions - last time was lambda sensor.
Have they read the fault codes - and if so, what are they? The codes will give at least an indication as to what is wrong - to have spent £300 of time diagnosing something like a misfire/EML and yet be no closer to a firm diagnosis doesn't suggest they're the best garage in the world.0 -
Thanks but I haven't explained it well. There is a fault on the switch for the lights and none of them are working - cost for repairing that is £128. They have put it through MOT about £50 and tried to diagnose engine light problem - no fault codes came up so they think it is mechanical rather than electronic/electric.
So now they are checking the compression - if that makes more sense to you than it does to you - it failed on emissions but they can't find out why initially - they think engine light and emissions issue might be one and the same but have not found out what that is yet. Also the engine light went off after 2 days - no idea why.
A coil spring has gone at the front - for the 2nd time in 2 years. So that is also factored in. They haven't done all this work yet - just quoted but will charge for diagnostics and MOT if I don't take it further.
It's all very confusing - I am trying to do a million things at mo including arrange my aunt's funeral and sort out her belongings so I am just trying to get the car back on the road if I can. I am not as focused on cost as I would normally be as I am in a bit of a mess re the family issues.0 -
So fed up of this garage now. They've had car since 10am yesterday!! Still no call with diagnosis..they close at 6pm.0

She's good to go now.
New lambda sensor (caused warning light but they seemed a bit slow working that one out for some reason).
New light switch to get all the lights back on and any bulbs.
New coil spring.
Think he said still very slight misfire but it is through MOT. And misfire might be ignition coil. I will pick up lunchtime tomorrow and see the paperwork. He has to forward date MOT as it wasn't expired until 28 FEb but never mind it made sense to do it together rather than waste money on a car that potentially would not pass MOT.0 -
What aspects of the emissions test is it failing on..0

Scrap that its sorted
cheap lambda sensors are as good as consumables nowadays0 -

If there is a misfire, and any unburnt fuel is entering the exhaust system, you may well go through lambda sensors quickly, as well as running the risk of poisoning the catalytic converter; so it is important to sort that issue.0 -

OK thanks. I'll speak to them tomorrow. I might take it in next week if they think they can sort it. Think it would cost more in fuel as well if misfiring?
A year ago the lambda sensor was cleaned not replaced. Think it was last replaced two years or more ago.0 -
Wasn't it around this time last year you were wondering if you could squeeze another year out of it and some posters were basically saying no chance?
Already looking forward to the 2017 update in 12 months time0 -
