Water softener overflow

A long shot, but somebody may know.
We have a Culligan water softener in the loft. It sits in a tank, about 6 inches off the bottom, with an overflow out of the tank as a safety measure.
I have never noticed it before, but in the bottom of the tank there is a lot of encrusted salt. It is obvious the softener overflow has ejected a lot of salty water, which has dried out. It is completely dry, not damp.
Is this a fault? Or is it nothing to worry about?
