Car Tax changes

I traded my car in on 2.3.15 with tax until 1st April, the new car that l had bought and also taxed, died on me after half an hour and had to be collected by the dealer. I took a different car from him which he said was taxed until 1st April 2015.

D.V.L.A have told me that l have to pay the whole of March 2015 for the car that broke down and l now don't have, that l drove for half an hour.

I also paid up to 1st April for the car that l traded in and D.V.L.A. have told me that l need to pay for the tax on the replacement car too for March 2015, even though the previous owner has already paid this.

So l will have paid AGAIN even though my new car is showing as taxed on the direct.gov website?

The new rules seem unfair on motorists. How can two drivers need to pay road tax on the SAME vehicle for the SAME month?

  • No used car is taxed, you have to retax it yourself from my understanding, and when you sell your trade in and the replacement you get the tax back so effectively yes you have to tax it again

The new system is very stupid, I agree. Really they should have just scrapped the tax altogether and just increased fuel duty by a small amount to compensate.

Get it paid ASAP because if you don't you're liable to be summonsed to the magistrates court where you could be ordered to pay up to a £1,000 fine.

No car can be bought with tax now.

@OP - where did you park your car, (supermarket, retail park, airport, train station etc) and who issued you with your ticket? Council or Private Parking Company ticket?

    Windscreen or ANPR ticket?

    Timeline please?

Then we can help you on this forum!

Blame MSE for the unclear forum name.

<<Parking Tickets, Fines and Parking Board>> not sure what's unclear about that?

Have I misread something? Happy to be corrected. :)

    'Parking tickets' - PCNs.

'Fines' - general fines? Parking fines? What does it mean exactly?

'And parking' - general parking queries not related to tickets and fines?

Go to the dealer and see about him paying the tax as its his car failing so quickly that caused you to get another from him. Pity you waited till 2/3 as you would have got a months tax back.

But there's nothing in the above that could ever be misconstrued to suggest this forum deals with car tax? If so, where?

When requesting payment of tax DVLA will have mentioned what can happen next if it is not paid - including going to court and being fined.

Maybe a bit premature for this board but it's kinda relevant.
