Thirzah - I remember the bread shortages very well. One Saturday morning Dad heard that the local bakery had got bread coming in, but you had to queue so we got in the car and Dad went in the queue followed by mum and I two persons behind. I think we were allowed two loaves each. I know we had the freezer as well but it was the small one with the drawers and it got put in there.

I remember my Dad taking Marvel milk power (and St Ivel in the milk shaped bottle) to work with him for his "packing up".
I remember my Dad being out on strike on the picket lines.

I also remember very well the one night Mum and Dad went to a Fondue party. Dad was looking forward to it (had zero idea what it entailed), my Nan was coming over that night to sit us. Anyway about 9pm time Mum and Dad came back with a huge Fish and Chip supper. My Dad played merry hell over this fondue business, "ruddy bits a bread in cheese". Oh how we laughed in fact I still laugh about it now and laughed out loud last night when I saw it.

Ohhh and I nearly forgot nearly everything new and innovative was from Ronco - I remember those adverts. "Newww from Roncooo

Yes, yes, yes same here, think my mums was orange - in fact I am sure it was. I still have the tea strainer and stand, the original solid nut crackers and her four segmented glass serving dish in the metal stand (which i will never get rid of.

I have mum's original glass footed cake stands as well. Never had a tea bag in our house until the 1990's and she had a twin tub washing machine right up until 1989 - drove me ruddy mad it did.

I well recall the power cuts and my dad being a three day working week. The Ford Cortina which was in mint condition brought back a big memory as dad had the 1600 GL but ours was in white!

My Dad had a Black Ford Consul, it was lovely and roomy inside and all of us five kids got in with room to spare plus the dog :D

I worked in Tesco when the shortages were going on and it was a nightmare, fights broke out and staff were accused of taking all of the sugar and bread for themselves, we were allowed the same as everyone else, one bag of sugar and one or two loaves of bread depending on the delivery.

We had the old Sweda tills in those days so in a power cut you had all staff on the shop floor and only a few customers were allowed in at any one tiome and staff escorted them around with torches, you had two on the till one cashier, and one operating the hand crank.

My dad started baking bread during the shortages. He would also get the dinner on if he was home before mum, unlike the dad in last night's episode.

Dad really liked The Good Life and started growing veg. We also used to go to pick your own farms. We got a large chest freezer and I remember sitting on the step by the kitchen door, shelling peas for the freezer and eating a few pods. The rest of the pods went to make wine.

We bought frozen food from Bejam's. I don't remember it being pick and mix like on last night's episode though.

Mum became the driver in our house, and our first car was a Ford Escort.

Gigervamp - I do not recall it being pick and mix in Bejam's either. In fact I was very surprised to see that and I thought to myself that it seemed odd.

I remember Mum and Dad used to go to Bejam's and stock up on food and my mum would check the till receipt was right - even in those days.

Butterfly Brain - I went on to work for the Ford Motor Company many years later at Brentwood during the late 1980's and throughout the 1990's when we were right at the front of product innovation. Miss that place I really do. They were good times working for Ford and I have remained loyal to the brand ever since.

The Consul, Cortina (late to be replaced by the Sierra) Corsair, Granada, Escort - the Fiesta of course broke cover in the 1970's and then along came the the Capri and well that's it Dad had to have one :rotfl:egged on by me :D

It's good to look back but you know times were flipping hard. I remember the rubbish being piled in the streets because the dustmen were out on strike. Then when the Dockers came out in solidarity they brought the whole country to a standstill - no imports no exports nothing. Brought the country to it's knees. I also remember my Dad queuing for petrol, because there was trouble in the Middle East over the Crude Oil and every day the price of the petrol would change - usually upwards.

Oh, my mum got a Capri too, after the Escort! She loved that car!

I too remember the strikes leading to piles of rubbish.

My dad worked for the post office and went on strike. He took me on a march too. It was the first time I'd been on a march, but I then went on to go on several others a few years later in the 80s. (CND, Anti-Nazi League, pro-life.)

Regarding last night's episode, she STILL can't use a blooming tin opener! And I wish someone would give them lessons on using knives. Still using a bread knife to chop onions. I thought they said in the first episode that the dad normally does the cooking, but his knife skills are dire.

Not watched the programme yet, but the 3 day week did not unduly affect me due to my job

I did have, and still do, a support the miners badge, which may be a bit hypocritical as I was not really affected

Shortages, any one remember the great loo roll crises? I remember scouring shops in Romsey and came up trumps with some

That was a new version. Her first book was How To Cheat At Cooking which was published in 1971.
