Let's not forget that the op paid by debit card. If this was a VISA debit card, then they have the option of a s.75 claim if the garage won't play ball.Never Knowingly Understood.

Just a word of advice, next time you plan on buying a secondhand car you can get the RAC or AA to carry out a full inspection on the condition of the vehicle you are intending to buy. They will identify any potential faults that will need attention and advise whether the vehicle is worth the sellers asking price. You do not need to be a member of the breakdown company. I can't remember how much it costs for them to carry out an inspection but let's say £100 for example. It's £100 well spent if it is going to save you £100's. If their report is not satisfactory then you go and look for something else.0

Buying in banger territory do not waste your time on AA/RAC inspections. They are hugely expensive in relationship to the value of the car, they do not inspect everything and they most certainly do not stand by their inspections: Even they are trained to wave away claims for age and price of vehicle being inspected. Alternatively, inspecting old cars they will give a blanket, useless warning report basically stating there is a potential faulty bit somewhere in between the bumpers.
Get a good mate, or have someone recommended who does know what they are talking about, to inspect your next purchase for a pint/small fee. Even then, old cars have their foibles and it is a condition of bangeromics that you will be disappointed sometimes.0 -
An AA inspection is certainly not cheap.

A tenner on an HPI check plus £50 for an MOT or an hour's labour at a garage you know and trust will tell you pretty much the same.0 -

They don't, as that only applies to credit cards, but they can try for a chargeback, which would be the path I would take after having tried to resolve it with the dealer first.0
