Home Insurance - partner living with me

Hi All,

I'm hoping to close on my first house soon and had an insurance question, hopefully this post is in the right place.

My partner will be moving in with me but he won't be on the mortgage or deeds etc.

Before I speak to my insurer I wondered if anyone here has experience of getting home buildings and contents insurance with his contents covered as well.

He's not a tenant, would he be classed as a lodger or just as "family"?

I've tried to find some info on here and other sites but it seems like there are sometimes problems dependent on how the person is classified and I don't want to cause problems with the mortgage by having a tenant when he isn't one.

Any experiences/advice very gratefully received!

Tee

All I can say is whilst hubby & I lived with my Dad when we looked after him, his insurance company just wanted to know how many people lived in the house & the relationship to the policy holder. So our belongings were covered. I'm sure they'll tell you when you get a quote - I'm sure it's a common thing for them.

Thanks Treecol, that is reassuring. I was sure this must be common but a bit of searching only seemed to bring up problems, I suppose people don't tend to share info when something is easy to sort out for a change!

When I moved into my OHs house his insurers just wanted to know number of people and whether I was bringing anything that would mean he had to up his contents limits, or name any specific items of value. They didn't charge him any extra for having his partner move in.

One thing to consider is whether you want to make it a joint policy, or to have him named as someone who could discuss the policy. Otherwise he wouldn't be able to make a claim unless you rang up to sort it out.

Thanks CP, seems like this should be all good then.
