Equifax credit file problems - fraud?

Hi there

I've tried to check for relevant threads. The nearest I can find is this re 'Prove it' letters (am not allowed to post link but thread ID 2607247 I think).

Here's my problem. I checked my Equifax file as I need to be looking for a mortgage soon.

I have a default marked by Lowell. They have been sold a debt by Next Directory. Somebody appears to have used my name, DoB and address to open an account with Next and then changed the address to a completely different address that I have nothing to do with. They've had £1000 worth of good delivered and then obviously not paid.

Next has sold the debt to Lowell who have put a default mark against my account. I now need to sort out a mortgage.

Equifax has raised with Lowell who has said they have to talk to Next (this was 3 weeks ago). I have phoned Lowell who have said their fraud department will look into it and it may take 45 days or more to hear back. I have verbally asked for proof of debt and now want to follow this up with a letter requesting proof of debt (Lowell say there is a statutory obligation for me to include £1 with this but I'm not sure I believe that).

Is a 'Prove it' letter the best way to proceed or am I missing a trick? I just want to apply for a mortgage and this debt is nothing to do with me!

Thanks in advance!
