Height of my house?

I need to find out the height of my house for a planning pre-application form. I vaguely remember tangent of angle x distance from object, which I can roughly do with a protractor and tape measure but not sure how to factor in slope and distance of protractor from the ground (ie. in my hand).

Or maybe I should just guess an average 1930 build semi? :o

how about measuring internally in 3 sections, ground floor to landing, landing to loft hatch, loft hatch to roof ridge (internal) add on 12" for the external roof ridge and you've got your house height.

if it's brick it's very easy...
if it's for a pre-app it's not that crucial as long as you're in the ball park, doing the internals as suggested is easy and would be close enough

I used a laser spirit level, a protractor, and a tape measure. I pointed the laser at a chimney stack level with the ridge, measured the angle of the laser from horizontal and the distance from where I took the angle measurement to directly under the ridge.

The height is the distance multiplied by the tangent of the angle.

I knew that maths lesson would come in useful one day.
In any right handed triangle the length of the hypotenuse (spl) squared is equal to the square of the other two sides........ Or something like that.
