However, he does have a point that it is no longer as easy as it used to be in the second hand market area of things. When you sell your own things there is no profit, so you just see the money coming in. Once you factor in the time it takes to source items, getting up to do car boots etc, handling returns , having unsold stock etc it can become a chore, or an expensive hobby.

I know several people who make a little money selling car boot finds as a sideline and there is a regular on here that actually makes a proper living but in a niche clothes market.

    .

This is true. I turned over £32k (8k profit) in my first year of 'flipping' (buying to resell) but it takes a lot of your time, setting up snipes, collecting parcels, washing, repairing, redying if neccesary, then packing, printing labels etc. It was worth it for me, but might not be for others. I did it alongside a full time job so it was bonus money for me. I'm not sure how much fun it would be as your only job.

That is very true, I find it very time consuming with my own items, taking pictures is not too bad of a chore but measuring up and listing all ins and outs seem to take a long time, I have to fit it in when I can, usually after the kids are in bed, but by that time I'm usually knackered. I suppose when you buy it already second hand, there is those extra wee jobs to make sure that the item is worth the money.
Thank you for sharing the brand, Gleeful, I have come across it yesterday for the first time, whilst searching google, but you were right, I have never heard of it before.
It is a bit of a gamble isn't it, if you sell something relly well, you feel all motivated again, but when you keep relisting item after item, it can be a bit of a disappointment.
The turnover and profit are quite impressive for a wee extra income, sounds like it is definitely is worth your while.

Also an inexpensive alternative is local Facebook groups. In my area I haven't had a lot of luck but I know some people are doing well over FB.

I have sell my used clothes on Ebay from time to time however I don't bother to spend time selling things like Next or H&M unless they are really trendy or unique.

I also put things on Vinted but it is slow moving however you can put clothes on without a fee and as long as you want (until it is sold).

Same here Asajj, not sure where you are, but I have given up on local FB groups and returned to eBay. Too much hassle with people wanting something for nothing (you ask £50 for a nearly new wooden unit and somebody says I'll give you £10 for it) and then asking you to deliver it too, a few people didn't turn up or weren't at home when we had agreed delivery, I almost were late for school pickup once because of this, annoyed was an understatement.

Sorry, didn't mean to rant on, I will have a look at Vinted, thank you. I have a couple of jackets that are very unique but not everybody's cup of tea, so I am just waiting for a right person to see them. If I list them there, it will hopefully open up more possibilities, thanks.

I've also helped family members and friends to clear out their old stuff, listing for them on ebay and splitting profit 50/50.
I wish that I had a friend like you!

We have a ton of stuff to get rid of, but quite simply don't have the time to eBay it. I'd be very happy to split the proceeds 50/50 with someone who'd do the photographing/listing/wrapping/posting for me.

Have you thought about selling it as a job lot? Either do it collection or use someone like My Hermes to post it cheaply. People are often looking on Ebay for job lots to break up and make a profit on.
  • I sell bundles of children's clothing on ebay for pocket money. I initially sold my son's old clothes then realised how much certain brands go for. I make approx £100 a month at the moment.
I visit car boots and charity shops and pick up the odd item here and there. Once I've got a collection in one size I'll sell on ebay as a bundle.

I'm a fan of Royal Mail over MyHermes. A 2nd class small parcel (45cm x 35cm x 15cm, currently up to 2kg) is £2.80 and that's about a carrier bag full of clothes. I also list bundles as Buy It Now, taking advantage of parents like me who don't have the time or functioning brain cells to remember to bid on auctions so buy things immediately!

Thank you Aubergine! Do you mind me asking how big your bundles are, I.e. Do you stop at 10-15 items? I've got two big bags of clothes (30+ items) to sell just now, but it's all used so will only sell for about £15-20 each, I am not really expecting much more for that, as I got a good wear out of them.

I must start using Buy it now price, I always go for auctions on the free listings weekends, but must consider that too, I suppose it's all about convenience isn't it.

BTW I like your 'functioning brain cell', that's exactly how I'm feeling just now lol, I always joke now that somebody replacem my brains with the cotton wool, that's what kids do to us :rotfl:
  • It really depends on the size of the clothes. I will literally cram as many clothes as I can in the parcel up to the weight/size limit. I think people will pay more for the clothes if the p&p costs aren't too high.

I'm also starting to look at vintage items. I picked up a blouse for 10p in a charity shop and sold it for £20. I find that a bit more risky though as I have no fashion sense so don't really know what I'm looking for yet!

Don't forget the larger size small parcel rate on RM finishes on 29th March , I'm not sure if there are plans to extend it or not.
