Gas bill help needed

Ok let me begin with saying that I live in a 2 bedroom house with only me and my wife in the household.
We both work full time and are both out for exactly the same time as we work together so don`t have our heating on when not at home.
My house is full double glazed and both cavity and loft insulated with only central heating ( Valiant Ecotech 28 boiler that is serviced every year and running at 97% efficiency), the only other appliance in the house using gas is a gas hob that is only used for 1 meal a day 5 days a week and 2 meals 2 days a week .

Ok my question is how much gas on average would this consume?
The reason I ask is that the Offgen averages for households is around £56 a month for 2 person house but we are paying at least £179 a month and when e check it we are paying excessive for a high user family.

We contacted British Gas and asked them to check our meter and at first we spoke to someone who stated we have a commercial meter and they would have to recalculate our bills back to 2011 when we moved in.
Great we thought it is getting sorted but while waiting for the guy on the phone to come back to us we got cut off with just a dead tone . we waited for a call back but it was not happening so we called back , we then get another customer services guy saying the first one was talking rubbish as it would not matter even if it was a commercial meter which he stated it was not.
now they get told about our readings and how it is excessive even for a high user they stated "I wouldn`t know I am only 19 and live with my parents" .
Can anyone tell us how to calculate usage ? as I am more than sure this is not right.
After google searching we found this meter is a E6S meter with major issues in service as a couple had a £26,000 bill with theirs.

Now worried.

Please post your usage in KWh, and ideally your tariff details as well, this will help you get meaningful advice.

It sounds like something is awry, but without the above we're flying blind.

Are you providing your own readings- if do you include the last 2 digits

Look back over your bills and give dates and actual readings

    Typically £ 700 a year
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

You need to start reading your meter weekly and daily to get an idea on how much you are spending and to ensure you are not confusing catch-up sums.

Use meter units and kWhs - to convert meter units to kWhs, if your meter is imperial (ft^3) multiply meter units by 33. If metric, multiply by 11.2. That approximation will covert your meter units to kWhs.

The £56 is about right for gas only - averaged over the whole year. In winter, with your heating on, you will use two to four times your average use.

But if your bills are averaging £156 year round then there is likely to be a problem (from the description of your home.)

Check that you are not being charged for an imperial meter if you have a metric meter.

If that is not the case, see how much a session of heating takes over one or two evenings.

Please check your meter and see if it reads in m3 (cubic metres) or ft3 (cubic feet).

Then check your gas bill and see if the readings are given in m3 or ft3.

As your usage is approx triple what you expect, and the conversion factor between m3 and ft3 is about 2.83, this is the first thing to check.

Yup, I'd bet Owain is correct.

We live in a three-bedroomed home with four chimneys, double glazing and cavity wall insulation (but 26 windows!). There is a retiree who has a heart complaint and is always cold in the household, the chtg is permanently on (and the gas fire joins it in the evenings). We only pay £118 per month...

Sorry for the delay in reply as been trying to get BG to take me seriously.

I have taken readings that are in m3 they read on the 13th,16th and 19th respectively

    06099
    06209
    06355

is this normal usage? as the meter digits also flash and return with a higher reading .
  • The meter is read correctly as I used a couple of sites to check including BG`s own as the first thing I thought was human error.
BG have sent a cheeky email saying they are glad that we have sent them our readings up to date and as per meter readings have billed us correctly,emmmmm........ the problem I thought was made painfully clear to them is the fact I think the meter is not recording correctly.
The problem is made worse by BG customer service stating they would have their manager call back and we said nobody in after 1pm so call before then any day but 2 calls same day around 3pm and 4pm and after a we will call back message nothing.
