I use lidl tablets broken in two - £1.99 for 30 tablets - no rinse aid and I don't recall ever topping up the salt so unless DH does it then no salt either. But we have soft water too. I'd say the other thing to check when you're buying is if you can get one with a fast wash. Our quickest takes about an hour which is mostly fine but if we have a load of people over or whatever sometimes I wish it was faster :) The other thing is that our machine leaves the dishes still quite wet, even if you let them sit a while. Maybe other machines allow to dry better?? Not sure cos it's the first one I've ever owned. It is fab having a DW by the way :)

Also to add in I've had the rust spots problems with knives but glasses have always been fine though I wouldn't chance anything expensive....

I've had my dishwasher for 6 years and it's still fab, I have two small kids so we do at least two loads a day, we put all sorts in ours, Plant pots, kids toys, oven racks, the small bin, the kids jellies shoes, ornaments, jam jars and tins, toothbrushes, scrubbing brushes, the jug off the mixer, all the juicer components - you can put loads of stuff in them! Also I just buy whatever works out the best offer at the time for the tablets, own brand are fine though and I never use rinse aid or salt! although having said that I do like the quantum and try to stock up when they on offer! Good luck with your new dishwasher!
sorry also I sometimes open it up as soon as it's finished give the racks a little shake and leave the door open as sometimes it helps with the drying!
