How to run GPS in car concurrently with CD player

I have a Garmin GPS but unfortunately have lost the user guide. I want to be able to play CDs at the same time as running the GPS but at present the sound from one cancels out the other. Both appear to be using my car stereo output.
What is the solution? Do I just mute the sound on the GPS and if so which is the command to do this (while keeping the sound running on the CD player)?

How does the sound from the Garmin get to the car audio system? Is it Bluetooth? Manuals for Garmin products are available from the Garmin website.0

Doubt this is possible without a serial interface to the mixer on the head unit. This is an option but not on many stock units, more common on pricier aftermarket units.0

It might be as simple as disconnecting the Garmin from the car and relying on an internal speaker.0
