Asda Charging VAT - kids clothing

Hi all,
Check your receipts if purchasing kids clothing from Asda.
I have just done an online order and seen I have been charged nearly four pounds VAT!
I have rung HO and apparently I am not the first to question this!
She confirms that she will get back to me in 72 hours so
Fingers crossed they can sort this out as I am sure they should be zero rated.
Am I wrong???

Depends on your definition of "kid" - The official guidance from
www.parliament.uk/briefing-papers/SN01123.pdf
gives 13 as the cut-off point
"
Clothing and footwear for young children are charged a zero rate of VAT. Articles must be both designed for young children, and suitable only for young children. In meeting these criteria, articles cannot exceed certain maximum sizes which accord with an average 13 year old child.
"
If you read the whole of the above .pdf it also talks a great deal about the 2nd sentence in the above quote . The clothing has to be both DESIGNED and SUITABLE ONLY for young children ( due to "abuse" of the regulations where a large amount of clothing was being bought by smaller women at zero-vat )0 -
Thanks for the reply.
Each item I purchased was for age group 2-3 year old. Not sure how there can be any ambiguity that these clothes are for anything but a toddler???0 -
You are not going to get them for any less though as the VAT on the receipt is calculated backwards from the ticket price. Someone at HO has added a VAT marker incorrectly to the product, the price you have paid will be correct.0

oh well you can't blame a girl for trying!
They have probably corrected now as I am not the only customer who has rung with this issue.0
