Travelling Alone

Hi,

I want to explore options of traveling alone, primarily around Europe this summer, I am in mid 30's and have not done much of traveling alone or backpacking but am open to try them. I will prefer to meet new people, does anyone have any recommendations of how best to approach it.

I will prefer to go in a group with people who are in similar situation but not able to find contacts/websites where I can register similar interest, any pointers ?

many thanks

You won't really find groups of strangers arranging to going travelling together online - I'd personally find that quite creepy! The best way to do it is to actually go and travel on your own and meet people when you arrive.

Blue264's suggestion is really good, though I generally don't like organised excursions like that (not that intrepid is a typical coach tour or anything!) - both because it's structured and you have no say in who goes with you. I generally make my own plans - staying in hostels (you'll be older than most obviously, but you generally won't be made to feel out of place - and if you're sociable you'll integrate just fine!) and meeting people there. If I get along particularly well with some of them then I may travel on with them, if not then I make my own way somewhere else and start again there.

So it basically depends on whether you prefer your holiday to be structured or not.
  • Just stay in hostels. You will meet people straight away.

I have just come back from travelling Asia and Aus and NZ. I am 29, had no problem hanging around with the young'uns.

Why not try a bit of travel in the UK and iron out how you feel about it.

There are hostels in our country, book a weekend, and go to a city and have a look around and stay at a hostel - or go camping - or catch a train and take a back pack and stay in a b and b.

Whatever you fancy trying abroad, try at home first, then you'll work out what bits you like, and what you don't.

After my 18 yr relationship failed 18m ago I finally took the plunge last week and went to Malaga for a few days then on to Seville. The first day was the hardest (dredged up all sorts of memories) but after that it did get easier. Days were fine, evenings a bit quiet sometimes. I read more than usual, enjoyed sight seeing, people watching and just wandering around Seville. Stopped for a drink, ate tapas had a sleep in the afternoon.
It wasnt as good as going with someone but was ok and I am glad I did it. trains were good to Ronda and Seville and 3* Hotel rooms were about 40euro/night including breakfast.
I am a 44 year old male. dont speak Spanish but did attempt the basics, found people to be helpful and friendly.

Well all I can say, is that is a bit of a contradiction.
If you are going to travel alone, then it means - travelling alone, and just exploring places, seeing the sights, eating the food and immersing yourself in the culture on your own.
Going with a group is something totally different.
  • thanks All for suggestions

andygb yes i see there is some contradiction I am traveling alone due to my personal circumstances at the moment but i do love company and will be good to meet new people as part of a group travel or traveling to somewhere stay in a hostel/backpack and then making friends there.
