Problem with my phone bill.

Hello everyone.

I have a problem that I need a bit of advice on.

I have a mobile phone contract with The people's operator. I have been very happy with them so far but in December I needed to change my phone number and the debit card that my direct debit was taken from.

I was told that I would have to cancel my old contract with them and then purchase a new one, which I did.
I used a different email address than the one I had currently registered with them to purchase this new sim contract and I got my new number and I then cancelled my old plan.
After activating my new phone number I emailed them asking them to change my email address to the old one i previously had registered and to change my direct debit details.
I received an email saying that this was all done and everything was fine.
I thought nothing more of it believing that everything was okay.

I recently started to notice that i was having problems with my mobile service. I logged into my account to check what was happening and noticed that my account email was still registered to my old number.
I called them up and they then proceeded to tell me that actually by the way in December my direct debit details had not gone through nor had the email account change and I now had an outstanding balance.
No one had bothered to get in contact with me since December(!!!) about these issues and so I had no idea. I also would not have been informed if I had not called them this afternoon as they were definitely not going to get in contact with me.

I was told rather rudely I had to pay up and it wasn't really their problem.

I do not mind paying (as I would have been if someone had bothered to inform me) but my issue is with my credit score.
I am a student and in 2013 I messed up my credit score. Since November of this year I have been trying to get it back on track so in a few years I can get a mortgage etc. so I need to ask a few questions.

Will this outstanding balance show up on my credit report?
If it does am I within my rights to have it removed as it is not fair on me to be negatively affected by something that I was not informed of?

How would I go about getting the information removed?

I would really appreciate any help with this issue
